At first view, it seems the region formed by Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka does not have many similarities to the “Old Continent”. However, despite the numerous obvious differences such as civilization, geography and history, South Asia could bear a resemblance to the past and current Europe: The fifty-six years rivalry between Pakistan and India should be compared to the last centuries of opposition between France and Germany. The Kashmir problem, although continuing to retain its own particularities, does by many aspects resemble the situations in Ireland or in Kosovo. After the end of the World War II, the devastated continental nations standing on the ‘good’ side of the wall benefited from US support and from the Marshall Plan, enabling them to rebuild their countries and reshape their foreign policies. After the operations in Afghanistan, the international community is now engaged in a new phase of obligations and involvements towards this unstable region. Part of this instability, the challenge posed by domestic Islamism and extremist Hinduism is, to a certain extent, similar to the instability suffered in Europe due to over-heightened nationalism. Furthermore, the Turkish endeavors to combine Muslim nature and modernism should motivate Pakistan and Afghanistan to successfully reshape their institutions in a comparable manner. Finally, the common roots and languages shared by the former British Colonies could potentially serve as a pillar in a new integration wave, just as common values served as one of the pillars of the creation of the European Union.
